Course Overview

The Combined Geo-Scientist (CGS) Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the recruitment of geologists, geophysicists, and chemists in various government organizations such as the Geological Survey of India, Central Ground Water Board, and others. The CGS exam is a national-level examination and is highly competitive.

The CGS examination consists of three stages: the Preliminary Examination, the Main Examination, and the Personality Test (Interview). Candidates who qualify in the preliminary examination are eligible to appear for the main examination, and those who qualify in the main examination are called for the personality test.

The CGS exam covers a wide range of topics related to geology, geophysics, and chemistry. The exam tests the candidate's knowledge of subjects such as mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, geomorphology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, environmental geology, seismology, geophysical prospecting, and others.

The course for the CGS examination covers all the topics and concepts included in the exam syllabus. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the subjects and helps candidates prepare for the examination effectively. The course covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of the subjects and includes practice sessions, mock tests, and previous year's question papers to help candidates understand the exam pattern and improve their performance.

What You'll learn

  • Geology: You will learn about the different branches of geology, including physical geology, structural geology, mineralogy, petrology, stratigraphy, and paleontology. This will involve studying the Earth's composition, rocks, minerals, fossils, and geological processes.
  • Geophysics: You will gain knowledge of geophysical principles and techniques used to study the Earth's physical properties. This includes seismicity, gravity, magnetics, electrical properties, and remote sensing methods
  • Geochemistry: You will learn about the chemical composition and processes within the Earth, including the study of rocks, minerals, water, and gases. This involves understanding chemical reactions, isotopes, and geochemical analysis techniques.
  • Hydrogeology: You will study the distribution, movement, and properties of groundwater in the Earth's subsurface. This includes topics such as aquifers, hydrological cycles, groundwater contamination, and water resource management.
  • Remote Sensing and GIS: You will be introduced to remote sensing techniques and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for data analysis and interpretation. This involves understanding satellite imagery, spatial data analysis, and map-making
  • Environmental Science: You will learn about the interaction between geoscience and the environment, including topics like environmental pollution, natural hazards, climate change, and sustainable development.
